Why US policies are, in large part, in fault for the current state of Mexico? Alejandro Mendoza

1. Long term economic domination. For many decades US Oil, Mining, Power, Communications, Rail and Transportation milked Mexico to a gross degree that not even the nationalization of resources and utilities was enough to minimize this one, it was too late, the damage was... See More done.

2. Corruptive Policies by US Companies. Before the nationalization and up to date, US companies have "greased" the hands of oligarchies, tyrants and totalitarians states in order to secure and corner resources and commodities markets, all over the world, Mexico, of course, not being an exception. When corrupted leaders are propped with money and arms, ingrains in the developing societies the rampant corruption that feeds itself, with the only true beneficiaries being a local elite and the US Companies.

3. NAFTA. What it was supposed to be a multi-lateral treaty has turned into a greater tool of US economic domination of Mexico: The introduction of large retailers (WalMart, Costco, Sam's Club) has overpowered the local ones to the point that they have needed to sell themselves to the US Co.'s. The many loopholes in the treaty that forbid the free transfer of goods from Mexico to US, plus the ban on transportation companies from Mexico to be able to deliver their products here has just enriched those forwarding agencies and transportation companies on the border. The Mexican market now is dominated by a plethora of US mega conglomerates (yes, including the worst US export to the world, McDonalds)

4. Drug Consumption. Like with undocumented immigration, those that take the risks necessary to make a buck, in the case of the undocumented worker, or multi-million fortunes, in case of the drug lords, satisfy the rampant demand in the US.

5. Indiscriminate Arms Sales. Now that the ban on assault weapons has expired and was not renewed by the Republican Congress/Cheney Administration (omission of the puppet's name intended), the flow of illegal arms into Mexico, greatly dwarfs, in numbers and consequences, the illegal migration of workers on the opposite direction. The large amount of overpowering arms has allowed the drug lords to escalate their internal wars and the one of all of them against the Mexican Government.

All the above terrible and easily proven, but the most onerous cause is...

6. NAFTA Allowance for Monsanto to export into Mexico its products, Bovine Growth Hormone and Genetic Modified Corn, has annihilated the commune cooperatives of peasants in the country. The peasants (that are the largest majority of undocumented workers in the USA) could not compete with the subsidized seeds, that they can’t re-plant since Monsanto forbids it, obliging farmers to continually buy the seed from the company. Even when Mexico have been trying to limit the importation of the GM corn only for human consumption, its natural leakage into the farms has provoked the elimination of the local (natural) strains. All this is sadly ironic since corn is a Mexican invention (research corn's origin and you will see).

So yes, much of the fault of why peasants from Mexico most migrate to the USA in order to feed their families lies squarely on the US policies and practices.
Not very easy to fix, since Monsanto continues to have a chokehold of both parties in power, not to mention a very interesting musical chairs game between the company and the EPA and Agricultural Department.
